GMA: Weir Cheerleads for DC Statehood
The issue of statehood for Washington, DC is among the most highly partisan in Congress. With a majority African-American population and many of its white residents being government workers, DC is an intensely Democratic stronghold. Statehood for DC would guarantee two more Dem senators and one more Dem congressman for the foreseeable future.
Is it really the role of a network news anchor to step into this controversy? Apparently so, in the eyes of Bill Weir. The Good Morning American weekend co-anchor was openly cheerleading for DC statehood today in the course of interviewing Adrian Fenty, mayor of the capital.
BILL WEIR: You’re campaigning heavily to give a voice to DC in Congress.
ADRIAN FENTY: Yeah, DC is the only place where Americans citizens pay federal taxes and don’t have a vote in the Congress.
WEIR [outraged]: That’s taxation without representation!
FENTY: That’s what our license plates say–Obama’s going to help us change it!
WEIR: I hope that’s the case.
