And so it was that the two Saturday anchors of the Early Show proudly displayed this morning the poster of themselves that they had produced via the website Obamicon.me with the iconic look that Shepard Fairey made famous. Co-anchor Chris Wragge plugged the site.
CHRIS WRAGGE: You might not be Barack Obama, but you can have your very own poster. The website Obamicon.me let’s you take that iconic red, white and blue Obama poster and put yourself in the president’s place. So look what we’ve done!
ERICA HILL: We offer you hope on a Saturday morning!
WRAGGE: Whatever your political persuasion, it certainly does like feel like a fun thing to try so we put our faces with hope. That’s us right there.
Though Wragge tried to float a figleaf with his reference to “whatever your political persuasion,” there’s no doubt about Obamiconme’s orientation. Their top-rated poster shows Pres. Bush over the caption FAIL.
Nice. The posters should be perfect on the anchors’ bedroom walls–right next to the ones of themselves as Che Guevara.
UPDATE: Obamicon.me writes to say “we’re non-partisan”
Nick Purdy, one of the owners of the Obamicon.me site, writes to say:
Wanted to point out, as one of the owners of the site, that we are NOT oriented pro-Obama. It’s just for fun. The reason that the Bush/Fail piece is top rated is that users made it that way. That’s not really surprising if you consider the current mood.
Anyway, as I said, I’m one of the owners of the site and didn’t vote for Obama. We very intentionally refer to the toy as “non-partisan” and we mean it.
Fair enough. If, as entrepreneurs, the owners of the site saw a market opportunity to make a few dollars from adoring Obama fans, more power to them. But that of course doesn’t go to the questionable journalism involved in the Early Show anchors’ stunt.
