CHRIS CUOMO: Can President Obama go to the people? Can he use that as his trump card here?
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: I think it might be what he has to do, Chris. And we’re starting to see elements of that just in the last couple days. The president’s gotten much tougher in his speeches. Now the president’s package has actually been losing public support, but the president remains very popular.
And to borrow a metaphor from the president’s inaugural address, he might have to replace his open hand with a clenched fist if this bi-partisan agreement doesn’t come today. You’ll see the president making more public pitches, going out if these unemployment numbers come today. He’s also planning a prime-time press conference Monday night, and you can expect a tough pitch if this bi-partisan deal doesn’t come together today.
The irony of Steph’s remark was not lost on Cuomo . . .
CUOMO: Who knew that the clenched fist would be about Congress? We thought he was talking about foreign people, foreign countries.
Was Steph’s phrase fashioned in his daily phone conversation with Rahm Emanuel, Paul Begala and . . . James Carville? “Georgie, we gotta pave the way for the president to rip the Republicans. How ’bout sayin’ this mornin’: he’s gonna have to go for the clenched fist?”

Steffi cracks me up. The Obama people have shut the republicans out of this process since it started. Any semblance of bipartisanship is nothing more than an attempted illusion on the part of Pelosi & Co.
As for Obama’s recent “tougher” speeches, actually, he is beginning to sound shrill and not a little desperate to me.
I wonder what Rahm’s phone call to Steffi will be about Monday? I guess we’ll know when his turn comes around on GMA.
