CHRIS MATTHEWS: Let me ask you a question: did you vote for Obama or McCain?
RICK SANTELLI: I voted for Mr. McCain. It should be between me and my God–but I did!
MATTHEWS: I want to know where you’re coming from personally, because you’re coming down hard on Barack, that’s what I’m asking for.
Matthews had opened the segment with a clip of White House press secretary Robert Gibbs’ contemptuous references to Santelli. I urge you to view the video to see how disdainful Gibbs was toward an American citizen who had the audacity to criticize the president’s mortgage bailout plan.
When Roger Simon of Politico appeared a bit later, he expressed approval of Gibbs’ sneering performance.
ROGER SIMON: I don’t think we should replace irrational exuberance with irrational anger or irrational selfishness. And I think the White House may be showing Mr. Santelli the proper amount of respect.
Matthews later called Santelli “Ebenezer Scrooge” for his opposition to having the 92% of Americans who pay their mortgages bail out the 8% who don’t.
But back to Matthews’ question. Now that one’s voting preferences are on the table, I can’t wait for other members of the MSNBC/NBC/CNBC family to start quizzing their colleagues on the subject . . .
