On Morning Joe today, Andy Serwer, Fortune magazine managing editor, condemned Rush Limbaugh and criticism of details of the Obama budget because “we need real action.”
The clip was rolled of Rahm Emanuel on yesterday’s Face The Nation describing Rush as the driving force behind the Republican party, and complimenting him on his candor in calling for Pres. Obama to fail. Pat Buchanan jumped in to defend Rush’s criticism, pointing to the tax increases on the most productive members of society included in the Obama plan.
That’s when Serwer made his odd declaration . . .
ANDY SERWER: You guys are going to be fighting over deck chairs on the Titanic. You know, I mean, this is a real crisis. This is not something to fight about little provisions of budgets. I mean, we need some real action here. And for [Rush], to suggest that the president should fail is ludicrous to me. I mean, What country are we living in here? Is he living in?
As far as Serwer is concerned, it’s “full speed ahead. Damn the direction.” As for those “little provisions,” they are the ones that would purport to pay for trillions in new programs by taxing the highest-earning 2%. As for what country we’re living in, it’s the one with the First Amendment, and a history, at least for the time being, of being the freest ever on earth.
