Schieffer made his admission on this morning’s Early Show.
HARRY SMITH: This was a debate in every possible way, except it was not face-to-face. Is it possible to say which case was more compelling?
BOB SCHIEFFER: I think you could, you know, argue that either case was compelling because both of them were. But I have to say, Harry, the fact that the President of the United States had to make this speech, the fact that Congress had turned him down in giving him the money to close Guantanamo, I have to say that on points, I give it to the Vice-President on this.
Just the fact that the debate took place, the fact that Congress turned the president down. President Obama’s been in the driver’s seat with the congress up until now, but congress pretty much pulled him over to the side of the road on this issue. And until he comes up with a plan on how to close Guantanamo down, I think they’re going to continue to deny him the funds to do just that.
Right now, I think the Vice-President has made his case, and at this point I’d have to say he’s winning.

Why in the world was this case – this compelling, logical, salable case – not made during time Bush and Cheney were in office?
The only reason I can come up with is that, since US media have been so one-sidedly against what Bush/Cheney did to protect the United States, they felt that trying to defend their actions would not have done any good.
But now, with Republicans at nadir status, with nothing to lose and nowhere to go but up, I guess the philosophy is “what the hell, let it rip.

I’m not sure of the intent of your post, which seems to suggest that I agree with the timing of Cheney’s argument.
Simply stated, I don’t. It should have been made a long time ago.
I guess it takes a long time to make up something like that.

For once I’m proud of him…and I’ve been watching him forever.
It would be nice to see the rest of the leftist talking heads just state the truth once in awhile instead of the talking points spoon fed to them from the WH morning calls from the spin room…
I’m sorry, but I saw nothing even remotely compelling about what Obama said in his hastily arranged speech.
However, I am pretty sure our enemies did.
